Same Timezone, Different World

For European students in ecology, biology and environmental sciences, South Africa offers one of the most diverse and dynamic conservation landscapes in the world. From savannah ecosystems to marine reserves, it provides hands-on exposure that is difficult to replicate in Europe.

South Africa shares historical ties with Europe, and for Dutch students the linguistic similarities between Afrikaans and Dutch can make adaptation easier. At the same time, the ecological scale, biodiversity and field conditions offer a completely different professional learning environment.

That said, South Africa is over 10,000 km away, at the southern tip of the African continent, which requires careful preparation prior to departure.

FlyWay supports you with:

Field researchers in the South African bush
We maintain close contact with our partners in South Africa. Your host will be academically qualified, experienced in supervision, and familiar with your goals, ensuring a high-quality experience.
We arrange accommodation near your placement to reduce travel time and costs. In some cases, your host may offer onsite housing.
We stay in contact with the Dutch embassy and can advise you on the best visa arrangements. We’ll assist with the paperwork for your application, though you will still need to apply in person.
Traveling from the international airport to your destination in South Africa can be done by bus, shuttle, or rental car. We’ll provide guidance based on your specific destination.
Booking flights online is simple, but we can offer advice on keeping costs low, avoiding long transfers, and even connect you with a travel buddy if you'd like.
Free Wi-Fi is not widely available in South Africa, and roaming can be costly. Having a local connection makes it much easier to inform your host or family that you've arrived safely and to make any necessary arrangements.
Having insurance to support you in unexpected situations can prevent unnecessary stress. We can help you choose the best coverage for your activities in South Africa.
Besides your main assignment, you may want to explore more of the country. We can connect you with explorers from other institutions who share your interest in discovering South Africa.
One of the most important pieces of advice we, as locals, can share before your trip is that: TIA (This Is Africa) should not be taken lightly. By staying aware and avoiding certain situations, you can spare yourself a lot of trouble.

South Africa offers extraordinary natural beauty and conservation opportunity, but also social and safety complexities that require awareness. With the right preparation, you arrive informed, confident and ready to contribute.

Programme Structure & Fees

How is the programme fee structured?

FlyWay operates on a single consolidated daily programme rate in partnership with our conservation providers.

Rather than separating administrative, accommodation and supervision costs, all core components are integrated into one programme fee for clarity and consistency.

What is included in the programme rate?

The daily programme rate includes:

  • Airport shuttle transfer from the nearest regional airport
  • Accommodation on or near the conservation premises
  • Access to research facilities and field equipment
  • Professional supervision and field mentoring
  • Structured pre-departure preparation and coordination

This integrated structure ensures that students arrive fully prepared and can focus entirely on their conservation internship experience.

What costs are not included?

The following expenses remain the responsibility of the participant:

  • International flights
  • Domestic travel within South Africa (if applicable)
  • Visa-related costs
  • Travel and medical insurance
  • Personal expenses

Clear distinction between programme costs and personal travel expenses ensures full transparency.

Why does FlyWay use a consolidated fee model?

The consolidated structure provides:

Administrative clarity
Predictable budgeting
No additional coordination charges
A streamlined placement process

FlyWay manages preparation, screening and coordination in advance so that conservation providers can focus on supervision and field operations.
